Abuja Erupts as Striking Workers Chase Wike’s Convoy, Label Him ‘Ole’ (Video)
Parts of Abuja were tense on Monday as striking workers reportedly pursued the motorcade of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, during a protest over unresolved salary and welfare issues.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The workers, already on strike, became agitated as Wike’s convoy passed, chanting “ole” (thief) and calling for immediate attention to their grievances, according to a video.
The demonstration was part of a wider strike by Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) staff, supported by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who picketed the National Industrial Court in Abuja in a total and indefinite industrial action. The NLC declared full backing for the strike, citing repeated violations of workers’ rights by FCTA management and political leadership.
The protesting workers highlighted several unresolved concerns, including unpaid promotion arrears, poor working conditions, and lack of essential work tools. They said previous engagements with FCTA authorities had not produced results, leaving them with no choice but to maintain an indefinite strike.
At the court, protesters carried placards demanding the removal of Minister Wike, reflecting growing frustration over unmet welfare demands. The action disrupted parts of Abuja’s central district, emphasizing widespread discontent among civil servants.
Labour leaders stressed that the strike is a last resort after months of unsuccessful negotiations with the FCTA.
