SERAP Sues Power Minister, NBET Over Alleged ₦128 Billion Missing Funds.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a suit against the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) at the Federal High Court in Abuja, over the alleged mismanagement of ₦128 billion in public funds.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The development was confirmed in a statement on Sunday by SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, who said the case was filed last Friday.

The case, filed under FHC/ABJ/CS/143/2026, stems from findings in the Auditor-General of the Federation’s 2022 audited report, released on September 9, 2025.

SERAP is seeking a court order compelling Adelabu and NBET to fully account for the allegedly missing or diverted ₦128 billion, including comprehensive details of how the funds were spent.

The organisation is asking the court to direct the minister and NBET to disclose specifics such as disbursement dates, names of contractors or beneficiaries, and the officials who authorised or participated in the transactions.

SERAP decried the ongoing hardship Nigerians face due to frequent national grid collapses and unreliable electricity supply, which it linked to entrenched corruption in the power sector.

“Nigerians continue to bear the consequences of widespread and systemic corruption in the power sector. There is a legitimate public interest in ensuring justice and accountability for these serious allegations,” the group said.

According to SERAP, granting the court orders would not only combat systemic corruption but also help reduce frequent transmission line failures and improve access to stable electricity.

“Ordinary Nigerians continue to pay the price for corruption in the electricity sector—living in darkness while still being charged exorbitant electricity bills,” the group added.

The suit, filed by SERAP lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare, Kehinde Oyewumi, and Andrew Nwankwo, is based on provisions of the 1999 Constitution, the Freedom of Information Act, and international anti-corruption conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory.

SERAP maintains that public institutions have a legal duty to uphold transparency, accountability, and to eradicate corrupt practices in governance.

No hearing date has been scheduled yet.
