Tinubu Approves Oil Drilling, Deep Seaport For Ogun

Governor Dapo Abiodun made the announcement while receiving the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, and other senior naval officers during a courtesy visit to his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The governor revealed that President Tinubu has authorized commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island in Eba, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
“Mr. President has approved the commencement of commercial oil drilling operations at Tongeji Island. Going forward, you will see significant activities there,” Abiodun said, noting that the project would drive economic empowerment, inclusion, and development for residents of the state’s coastal communities.
In addition, the governor disclosed that the President has greenlit the immediate take-off of the long-delayed Olokola Deep Seaport project, also in Ogun Waterside.
“Our proposed Olokola Port, which has been on the drawing board for years, is now back on track. I sincerely thank Mr. President, as this is primarily his initiative,” Abiodun said. He added that high-level meetings over the past two weeks reflect the President’s strong commitment to ensuring the project’s completion.
Abiodun explained that the Olokola Deep Seaport would help decongest the overstretched Lagos ports, particularly with the development of the coastal road as an alternative logistics corridor. He further revealed that the port is expected to be substantially completed by next year and will be designated the Blue Marine Economic Zone in recognition of its strategic coastal location and commercial potential.
The governor also highlighted security measures, noting that a Forward Operations Base would be established by the Nigerian Navy at Tongeji Island to protect the oil exploration and port activities, and prevent infiltration from the neighboring Benin Republic.
“The naval presence will also deter any actions that could threaten Nigeria’s territorial integrity. Our administration is committed to improving living conditions and providing basic amenities for residents of the island,” he said.
Abiodun commended the Nigerian Navy for its role in maintaining security across the state and described Rear Admiral Mustapha as a “seasoned and accomplished officer” whose leadership would strengthen Ogun’s security framework.
Rear Admiral Mustapha, for his part, emphasized Ogun State’s strategic importance to national security. He disclosed that the Tongeji Island naval outpost would be upgraded to a Forward Operations Base due to the area’s oil potential, adding that the visit aimed to enhance collaboration between the Navy and the Ogun State Government while securing Nigeria’s border with Benin and preventing criminal infiltration.

The report is expected to be presented at 12 noon in the Honourable Minister’s Conference Room at the Ministry of Interior. Journalists have been asked to be seated by 11:35 a.m.
The investigation was launched following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The NSCDC initially attributed the incident to a suspected disease outbreak. However, its national headquarters later clarified that the cause of death had not been conclusively established and would require medical and laboratory confirmation.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed the government’s position while expressing condolences to Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, the state government and residents, traditional leaders, the people of Wushishi, and the families and loved ones of the deceased.
Idris assured Nigerians that the government considers every citizen’s life important and would ensure that the circumstances surrounding the deaths were investigated thoroughly, transparently and impartially.
He added that immediate measures had been taken to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
As part of the response, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, suspended the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, while a full-scale investigation into the incident was initiated.
The committee’s report is expected to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the deaths and help establish accountability.

The loss at Old Trafford has intensified scrutiny of Carrick as Manchester United continue to struggle with inconsistent performances and results this season.
According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who shared the manager’s comments on X on Sunday, Carrick acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his future but maintained that he would continue carrying out his duties as usual.
“I totally understand the situation. I’m not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. I’m carrying on as normal and, you know, I love this place,” he said.
The former Manchester United midfielder also reaffirmed his commitment to the club, insisting that he would continue to act in what he considers the team’s best interests despite the mounting pressure.
Bournemouth’s victory further compounded United’s recent difficulties, marking their third defeat in four home matches and extending their winless run across all competitions to eight games.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and other senior club officials are considering possible replacements as they assess Carrick’s future at Old Trafford.
Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann and ex-Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe have reportedly emerged as leading candidates for the position.
However, Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada are expected to make the final recommendation before presenting their preferred candidate to Ratcliffe.
The club has yet to announce any decision regarding Carrick’s future, leaving uncertainty over who will lead the team into their next Premier League fixture against Chelsea.
