Kano APC Flags Off Membership Registration As Gov Yusuf’s Defection Stalls.

Published

on

The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially launched its online membership registration amid ongoing uncertainty over Governor Abba Yusuf’s anticipated defection to the ruling party.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The exercise, initially scheduled for January 15, was postponed indefinitely, reportedly at the governor’s request. Sources told Daily Nigerian that when Yusuf learned the Kano APC was moving forward with the registration, he informed Vice President Kashim Shettima, who instructed party leaders—including national chairman Nentawe Yilwatda and former Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje—to wait until Yusuf formally joined the APC.

The governor’s defection had been expected to coincide with his birthday on January 5 but was rescheduled multiple times—to January 12, then January 16, and later January 20—citing reasons ranging from state APC leaders being away on holiday or Umrah to the need for “wider consultations.” Each planned announcement ultimately failed to materialize.

The uncertainty surrounding Yusuf’s move followed a private meeting with his political godfather, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, at Miller Road in Kano. The meeting reportedly aimed to ease tensions over Yusuf’s plan to leave Kwankwaso’s camp, with the governor assuring him he would not make a final decision until meeting President Bola Tinubu in France to discuss Kwankwaso’s conditions for joining the APC. After missed opportunities to meet Tinubu in Paris and Abu Dhabi, Yusuf finally met the president on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. A planned meeting between Tinubu and Kwankwaso was reportedly put “on hold.”

Despite the indecision, the Kano APC inaugurated an e-membership registration committee co-chaired by Rabiu Suleiman-Bichi, Managing Director of the Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin Authority, and Baffa Babba-Dan’agundi, Director-General of the National Productivity Centre. While a “001 membership card” was reportedly reserved for Yusuf at his Diso Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, the registration process has now officially begun statewide.

  • Reforms Yielding Results: He credited ongoing bank recapitalisation and financial reforms for ending the era where banks could suddenly collapse and cause depositors to lose their savings.

Ultimately, the Senate President maintained that a combination of proactive security operations, economic reforms, and civic cooperation will drive Nigeria’s path toward lasting recovery and national development.
