Nigeria beat Algeria 2-0 at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on December 10, 2025, but the match ended in chaos as Algerian players and officials confronted the referees, blaming them for the team’s elimination. CAF reported that the Senegalese referee, Issa Sy, and his officiating team were targeted, leading to heated on-field clashes that involved some Nigerian players. Referees were eventually escorted off the pitch for safety as the altercations continued toward the dugout.
CAF’s Disciplinary Committee imposed a $25,000 fine on the Algerian Football Federation for the actions of its players and officials, citing conduct that brought the game into disrepute. An additional $15,000 fine was issued for multiple violations, including five yellow cards, smoke bomb usage by fans, and objects thrown from the stands. A further $60,000 fine targeted abusive gestures by supporters, including waving banknotes at referees and breaching security protocols.
Two Algerian players received suspensions over the incident: Rafik Belghali for four matches and goalkeeper Luca Zidane for two.
The Algerian Football Federation has announced that it is appealing CAF’s sanctions in a bid to overturn the fines and suspensions.
