Ex-Masari Aide Defects To ADC, Vows To ‘Rescue’ Katsina.
A former aide to ex-Governor Aminu Bello Masari, Almustapha Saulawa, has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing principle and a commitment to “rescue” Katsina State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Saulawa officially announced his defection on Tuesday at the ADC secretariat in Katsina, where he formally registered as a party member alongside a large group of supporters, many of them youths.
Explaining his presence at the party office, Saulawa said it was necessary to legitimize his political activities within the ADC.
“I’m here to declare myself a member of the ADC, because by law, I cannot act politically until I belong. That is why I am formally joining today, together with my supporters, particularly the teeming youth of Katsina,” he said.
A founding member of the APC in Katsina, Saulawa said his defection came after years of loyalty to the ruling party, insisting that the ADC is now a serious contender ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“I was part of the ruling APC and worked tirelessly from the ground up, but today I decided to join the ADC. I grew tired of being a sycophant to my former party,” he stated.
He projected confidence in the ADC’s prospects, adding, “I’m certain the ADC will win in 2027. The APC knows this too, having seen the calibre of people, especially youths, who are now joining. They know their dominance is over.”
Saulawa further criticized the APC, claiming the party now comprises just two types of members:
“The APC has only two categories of people left: those intimidated by empty threats, and those in government who fear losing stipends or contracts if they defect, particularly to the ADC,” he said.
When asked if he would contest any elective position in 2027, Saulawa said he had not yet decided, emphasizing that his immediate priority is building the ADC in Katsina.
“My main goal is to establish the party and chart a path to rescue Katsina State. Whether I contest in 2027 is something I will decide later,” he explained.
On concerns about his ties with the incumbent governor, Dikko Radda, Saulawa said his defection was entirely a personal political decision.
“Politics is personal. My relationship with Governor Radda will not influence this decision; it is entirely mine,” he said.
Reflecting on his political journey, Saulawa highlighted his years of service to the APC at both state and federal levels, which culminated in his appointment as Chief of Staff under Masari.
“I helped build the APC into what it is today at both the state and federal levels, which enabled me to serve at various capacities, ending with my role as Chief of Staff to former Governor Masari. I have now decided to move on,” he said.
Saulawa’s defection adds to a growing list of prominent APC defectors in Katsina, including former Secretary to the State Government Mustapha Inuwa, Senator Ibrahim Tsauri, and Senator Baban Kaita, signaling a potential coalition capable of challenging the APC’s long-standing dominance in the state.
