Bribery Case: Diezani Faces UK Court Ahead Of January Hearing.

Former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke appeared on Monday at Southwark Crown Court in London, United Kingdom, for the preliminary hearing in her bribery trial.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The hearing took place before Justice Thornton in Court 8, marking Alison-Madueke’s first court appearance ahead of the full trial set to begin on January 26, 2026.

The ex-minister was charged in August 2023 by UK authorities over allegations of accepting a £100,000 bribe. According to the National Crime Agency, she is suspected of receiving the bribe in exchange for awarding multi-million-pound oil and gas contracts during her tenure as Nigeria’s Petroleum Minister from 2010 to 2015 under former President Goodluck Jonathan. Alison-Madueke also made history in 2014 as President of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

In October 2023, a Westminster magistrates’ court granted her bail of £70,000, citing her as a flight risk. Conditions of her release included an 11 pm to 6 am curfew, continuous electronic monitoring, and the posting of a £70,000 surety before leaving the court.

Beyond the UK criminal proceedings, Alison-Madueke is also involved in multiple asset recovery actions. In January 2025, Nigeria and the United States signed an agreement for the repatriation of $52.88 million recovered from Galactica assets linked to her. US authorities alleged that she and her associates used funds from illicitly awarded oil contracts to acquire luxury properties in California and New York, as well as the 65-metre superyacht, Galactica Star.

Domestically, Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has also pursued assets connected to the former minister within the country.
