At least six people, mostly students returning to school, have been confirmed dead after a boat capsized at the Buruku River crossing in Buruku Local Government Area, Benue State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Several other passengers remain missing following the late-night incident on Monday. The wooden boat, reportedly carrying both passengers and vehicles, sank midway through its journey to the Buruku axis of the river around 11:00 pm, according to local sources.

An eyewitness blamed overloading, describing the tragedy as preventable.

“The boat was carrying passengers and cars—over 45 people in total. About 35 were rescued alive, six deaths have been confirmed, and others are still missing. Most victims were students heading to schools in Gboko and nearby communities. This is very unfortunate,” he said.

The witness also criticized persistent negligence and poor regulation of inland waterways, noting that similar tragedies occur almost every year despite official promises to improve safety.

Reacting to the incident, the Benue State Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Denis Iyaghigba, expressed “grave concern and deep distress,” describing the mishap as a reminder of the dangers of unsafe and unregulated river transport.

In a statement, Iyaghigba extended condolences to the victims’ families and the Buruku community, noting that preliminary reports indicate the accident occurred during routine river transport.

He confirmed that the ministry has launched a full-scale investigation to determine the causes, including possible safety violations, operational negligence, or environmental factors. Relevant stakeholders have been mobilized to intensify rescue and recovery operations.

“We are committed to accounting for all passengers and conducting a thorough, transparent investigation, with sanctions for any operator found culpable,” Iyaghigba stated.

The commissioner warned that recklessness and disregard for safety standards will no longer be tolerated, emphasizing strengthened enforcement through vessel inspections, operator licensing, passenger safety education, and closer monitoring of river transport.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Governor Hyacinth Alia-led administration to protecting lives and property: “Economic development must never come at the expense of human safety.”

Momodu had argued that a pairing of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi could perform strongly in the election, citing their past collaboration in 2019 and Obi’s 2023 electoral performance.

Responding, Tanko questioned the logic of choosing a candidate who might win a primary but lose the general election, insisting that the Obi–Kwankwaso combination would be more formidable.

He further warned that if the ADC fails to zone its presidential ticket to the South, the party risks losing the 2027 election.

Tanko maintained that with Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso on the same ticket, victory would be decisive and swift.
