Fubara Moves To Calm Rivers Crisis As Lawmakers Reconsider Impeachment.

Traditional rulers have established a mediation committee to facilitate resolution, while the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), led by former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), has also initiated consultations between both sides. Sources indicate that these behind-the-scenes efforts aim to restore calm and prevent a breakdown in governance.
Governor Fubara reportedly engaged the Assembly leadership, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, and instructed his supporters to avoid public confrontations or comments against Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, signaling a willingness to de-escalate tensions.
The impeachment notice, served last week over alleged gross misconduct, provided a seven-day window for the governor and deputy to respond. The APC, which controls both the governorship and the majority in the Assembly, has intervened to broker reconciliation. Party officials emphasized the need to maintain cohesion within the governors’ forum and prevent internal conflicts from escalating.
Following the party’s involvement, sources suggest the House of Assembly may reconvene to suspend the impeachment process and pursue a political settlement, reflecting a shift toward dialogue and compromise.
