The new agreement is expected to end prolonged disruptions in federal universities caused by lecturers’ strikes and to strengthen the overall academic framework. Key provisions of the agreement include a 40% salary increase for academic staff, enhanced pension benefits for professors who will receive pensions equivalent to their annual salary at retirement, and a more robust university funding model that guarantees dedicated allocations for research, libraries, laboratories, equipment, and staff development.
The agreement also proposes the establishment of a National Research Council (NRC) with at least 1% of Nigeria’s GDP earmarked for research funding, reinforces university autonomy and academic freedom, and mandates elected academic leadership positions (Deans and Provosts) exclusively for professors. Furthermore, the agreement stipulates no victimization of individuals involved in the negotiation process, takes effect from January 1, 2026, and is scheduled for review after three years.
