US AFRICOM Pledges Stronger Support As NDLEA Deepens War On Drugs.
Top officials of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) have met with the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd), pledging enhanced cooperation and sustained support in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the meeting, held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, reviewed the long-standing partnership between the NDLEA and United States authorities, with both sides expressing satisfaction over the existing level of collaboration and a shared commitment to strengthening ties to combat drug-related crimes.
Leading the US delegation, Philip Esch, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration’s liaison to AFRICOM, described the relationship between the NDLEA and the US-DEA as critical to American interests, noting that Marwa’s leadership and openness to international collaboration have greatly strengthened the partnership. He added that the United States looks forward to deeper engagement with the agency following the renewal of Marwa’s tenure.
Another member of the delegation, James Elseth, said the United States remains committed to supporting the NDLEA because of the agency’s growing impact both within Nigeria and across the region. He noted that the NDLEA’s operations contribute significantly to regional and global security, aligning with international efforts to dismantle organised criminal networks.
Elseth also commended the NDLEA for the effective maintenance of equipment and facilities previously supplied by the US government, revealing that two major support projects are already in progress to complement ongoing training programmes and other forms of technical assistance.
In his response, Marwa expressed appreciation to the delegation for the visit and acknowledged the consistent support NDLEA has received from US AFRICOM over the years. He also commended Esch for his long-standing service to the US government.
Marwa attributed the agency’s recent successes to the backing of international partners and the support of the current administration under President Bola Tinubu. He highlighted the connection between drug trafficking and terrorism and called for additional assistance in key areas, including airport scanning technology, digital forensic tools, portable drug detection devices, forensic laboratory equipment and trained sniffer dogs.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared resolve of both parties to deepen collaboration in tackling drug-related threats and strengthening security within Nigeria and the wider region.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
