Peter Obi Urges Government To Suspend Controversial Tax Laws Amid Economic Hardship.
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the federal government to suspend the implementation of the newly enacted tax laws, describing them as poorly structured and unfair to Nigerians already grappling with economic difficulties. According to Nivo News, Obi raised his concerns in a post on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting issues with the changes introduced to the tax system.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Obi cited a report by global accounting firm KPMG, which reportedly identified 31 significant problems in the new legislation, ranging from drafting errors to policy conflicts and administrative gaps. He expressed concern that such flaws were only discovered during private consultations between the National Revenue Service and KPMG, arguing that if experts require closed-door meetings to understand the laws, ordinary Nigerians would struggle to comply.
The former Anambra State governor emphasized that taxation is not merely a revenue tool but a social agreement between the government and citizens. He stressed that this agreement cannot function effectively if citizens do not understand the rules or trust those responsible for enforcing them. Obi contrasted Nigeria’s situation with other countries, noting that tax policies abroad are typically accompanied by visible public benefits, including improved healthcare, education, infrastructure, and job creation.
Obi also criticized the lack of broad consultations before finalizing the new tax laws, explaining that standard practice involves extensive engagement with businesses, workers, and civil society to ensure public understanding of obligations and benefits. He warned that enforcement of the laws without prior consensus or clear communication, particularly after the removal of fuel subsidies, would exacerbate economic hardship for citizens facing rising food prices, transportation costs, and reduced purchasing power.
The former presidential candidate concluded that introducing a complex and inconsistent tax regime at this time reflects poor governance. He urged the government to build trust, communicate effectively, and create a national agreement before moving forward, stressing that genuine reform is only possible through transparency, shared understanding, and clear public benefits.
