Osimhen To Lead Super Eagles As Captain In Crunch AFCON Semi-Final.
Victor Osimhen will lead the Super Eagles as captain when Nigeria take on hosts Morocco in the semi-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, following the suspension of regular skipper Wilfred Ndidi. The Leicester City midfielder was first cautioned in Nigeria’s Round of 16 victory over Mozambique before receiving another booking in the quarter-final triumph against Tunisia, automatically ruling him out of the semi-final clash.
Osimhen, who was named vice-captain ahead of the tournament, is familiar with the leadership role. The Napoli striker previously wore the armband during Nigeria’s final group-stage match against Uganda and will now captain the side in one of the most decisive fixtures of their AFCON campaign.
The Super Eagles head into the semi-final brimming with confidence after a convincing 2-0 victory over Algeria, a match in which Osimhen played a pivotal role by scoring a goal and providing an assist. Nigeria’s attacking dominance has been one of the standout features of the tournament, with the team emerging as the highest goal scorers.
Adding to Nigeria’s growing reputation, South Africa forward Zakhele Lepasa has tipped the Super Eagles as the strongest team remaining in the competition. He suggested that none of the semi-finalists possess the defensive quality required to neutralise the threat posed by Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
Lepasa noted that Nigeria entered the tournament under intense pressure following their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but has responded emphatically with commanding performances in Morocco. He described the Super Eagles as the most complete side at the AFCON, highlighting their attacking depth and goal-scoring spread across multiple players.
While acknowledging Morocco’s impressive run on home soil, Lepasa questioned whether the hosts have been sufficiently tested, pointing out their reliance on Brahim Díaz for goals. He argued that Nigeria’s attacking balance gives them a decisive edge, insisting that containing Osimhen and Lookman would be a major challenge for the Moroccan defence.
