The school had been closed after the November abduction, but Dr. Bande said confidence among parents and students has been restored through counselling services and the full deployment of security personnel, allowing academic activities to resume. She added that the government remains committed to implementing all necessary measures to safeguard both students and staff.
According to Dr. Bande, Governor Nasir Idris has directed security awareness programmes for school principals and staff to prevent similar incidents. Similar sessions have reportedly been conducted in Zuru, Yauri, Jega, Bunza, and Argungu, with the final session held in Birnin Kebbi. The commissioner emphasised that school security is a shared responsibility involving principals, teachers, students, and the local community.
Dr. Bande further urged schools to maintain strong relationships with host communities, describing them as crucial partners in local security, and advised principals to remain in regular contact with security agencies for guidance and proactive support. She praised Governor Idris for approving the deployment of security operatives to schools, saying it has helped restore confidence among teachers and students.
The Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Department of State Services (DSS) were commended for training school leaders on security measures and safety awareness. At the meeting, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) for Kebbi, ACP Yakubu Lawal Gumi, warned principals to remain vigilant, maintain proper lighting, and monitor suspicious activity.
The Deputy Commandant of the NSCDC, Wale Henry, highlighted the importance of proper fencing, alert personnel, and vigilance to protect schools, while cautioning against internal threats such as cultism. Governor’s Special Adviser on Security, retired Colonel Danladi Hassan Ribah, confirmed that directives to secure all schools in the state have been implemented. He also noted that discussions on de-boarding certain schools are ongoing, with a committee report submitted for the governor’s final decision.
