According to Nivo News, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, sanctioned the posting of Chief Superintendent of Police, Tomofe Nwabueze, as the new DPO of the Ekpoma Division in Esan West Local Government Area, with immediate effect.
Nwabueze replaces the former DPO, Nelson Igbinoba, who was relieved of his duties in the aftermath of the deadly unrest that rocked the Edo Central Senatorial District.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, who explained that the redeployment forms part of a broader security assessment and strategic realignment aimed at restoring peace and stability in Ekpoma.
The police command noted that the reorganisation of the Ekpoma Division is intended to strengthen operational effectiveness and rebuild public confidence in the wake of the violence.
The crisis erupted on Saturday when residents took to the streets to protest worsening insecurity in the area, including persistent cases of kidnapping and the killing of a youth the previous night. Protesters initially blocked a major highway to press their demands for improved security.
The situation later deteriorated when hoodlums allegedly infiltrated the protest, launching attacks on traders at the livestock market and causing widespread destruction. Footage circulating on social media showed animals killed and property damaged during the unrest.
The hoodlums also vandalised the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma, Zaiki Anthony Abumere II, an incident that sparked outrage across the state.
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, subsequently condemned the violence and destruction of property, describing the attack on the traditional ruler’s palace as unacceptable and a threat to peace and order.
