Buratai Sounds Alarm: Soldiers Everywhere Are Weakening Police Capacity In Nigeria.
Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), has raised concerns over the pervasive deployment of soldiers across Nigeria, warning that it is undermining the development and effectiveness of the Nigerian Police Force and other civilian security agencies.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Monday during the keynote address at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day lecture in Abuja, Buratai noted that while military involvement in internal security provides immediate stability, it also fosters dependency that weakens civilian policing capacity and strains defense resources.
According to Buratai, the current deployment pattern has created a critical imbalance, overstretching the military, diverting defense budgets to routine policing, and diminishing the Armed Forces’ readiness to address conventional threats. He emphasized that constitutionally, the Armed Forces’ primary duties are to defend the nation against external aggression, protect territorial integrity, suppress insurrections, and support civil authorities when required.
Buratai argued that internal security should be civilian-led and intelligence-driven, with the police and state security services taking the lead. He warned against allowing developmental and internal security roles to permanently replace the military’s core mandate.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains central to national development and stability, but its expanded internal functions must not compromise its core responsibilities or weaken civilian institutions,” he said.
The former army chief called for a structured, time-bound, and condition-based exit strategy to gradually return internal security duties to civilian authorities while maintaining the military’s preparedness for its principal mandate.
