Godfatherism Sparks Political Turmoil in Rivers and Kano as Wike, Kwankwaso Battle Governors

According to Nivo News, political tensions are mounting in Rivers and Kano states as governors face challenges from their estranged political godfathers ahead of the 2027 general elections. The crisis follows decisions by some governors to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC), leaving their former patrons at odds with them.

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, have both fallen out with key political figures. In Rivers, Fubara’s strained relationship with former Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has intensified since Fubara’s alignment with the ruling party, raising questions about his re-election bid. Meanwhile, in Kano, Governor Yusuf’s planned defection from the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC has created a rift with his godfather, Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the NNPP.

Governor Yusuf’s decision has reportedly led to the withdrawal of support from loyalists of the Kwankwassiyya Movement, several of whom hold positions in the state government. Sources indicate that Mustapha Kwankwaso, Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sport, and at least seven other loyalists are set to resign, while the NNPP has reportedly begun preparations to field a replacement for Yusuf in the 2027 elections.

In Rivers, Fubara has faced multiple clashes with Wike since the 2023 elections. The latest dispute follows Fubara’s alignment with APC and alleged reversal on an agreement reportedly mediated by President Bola Tinubu during the State of Emergency in Rivers. Although the agreement was not made public, it is said to have included a commitment by Fubara not to seek a second term. His defection, however, has triggered moves suggesting he intends to run for re-election with APC support. Wike has spent 17 days touring Rivers’ 23 local government areas to consolidate political influence and has vowed to prevent Fubara’s return, warning that his own political career could be jeopardized if Fubara succeeds in 2027.

Adding to the political tension, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Wike have initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, citing alleged gross misconduct and improper handling of state finances. Critics, however, including Sydney Gbara, immediate past PDP publicity secretary in Rivers State, have dismissed the impeachment as a distraction, noting that the 2025 budget was passed and assented by the National Assembly and remains valid until July 2026.

The state Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, disclosed that the suspect and the deceased initially connected online and developed a friendship after communicating for several months.

According to Daaor, Samuel later invited the woman to his residence in the Ahor area of Benin City, where he allegedly stabbed her to death with a knife.

The police commissioner stated that the suspect had been taken into custody and would be charged in court after investigations were concluded.

However, Samuel has offered a different account of the incident, claiming that the woman was injured during a struggle over a knife following an argument between them.

Speaking in an interview, the 21-year-old insisted that he did not intend to kill her.

“I didn’t mean to kill her, but she got injured in the process of struggling with her for the knife during an argument,” he said.

The suspect explained that he had met the woman on social media and that their friendship developed over several months of online conversations before she decided to visit him.

He said they were initially having a discussion at his residence, but the conversation eventually escalated into an argument.

“On the day she came to my house, we were discussing, but the discussion snowballed into an argument. In the process, she picked up a knife and intended to stab me,” he claimed.

Samuel further alleged that the woman sustained an injury to her neck while they were struggling over the knife.

He maintained that he attempted to save her after she was injured but was unable to prevent her death.

“I didn’t mean to kill her. I tried to save her after she was injured, but she died,” he said.

The police are expected to conclude their investigation before proceeding with the case in court.
