According to Nivo News, the toddler, one of the author’s twin sons, passed away last Thursday following a brief illness that allegedly worsened while under medical care.
Confirming the development on Sunday, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, described the loss of a child as a deeply painful tragedy and disclosed that the governor had ordered immediate action.
She stated that Governor Sanwo-Olu had instructed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to launch a thorough, independent and transparent probe into the circumstances leading to the child’s death, with the aim of uncovering both the immediate and underlying causes.
According to Ogunyemi, HEFAMAA has already visited the private medical facility involved and begun an extensive assessment of all allegations, medical records and reports linked to the incident. She added that the agency would carry out a detailed review to determine whether established medical and safety standards were adhered to.
The health adviser further revealed that HEFAMAA would work closely with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and other relevant regulatory bodies to ensure the investigation meets professional and ethical standards. She explained that the inquiry would examine clinical procedures, professional conduct, patient safety protocols, and the responsibilities of all individuals and institutions involved in the child’s care.
She assured that the findings of the investigation would be made public upon completion in the interest of transparency and accountability, stressing that anyone found guilty of negligence, misconduct or regulatory breaches would face appropriate sanctions under existing laws.
Meanwhile, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, in a statement released on Saturday, alleged that her son’s death was the result of what she described as criminal negligence by medical personnel at the facility. She specifically accused the anaesthesiologist involved of being careless and recklessly indifferent to the life of a child.
According to the author, her son initially presented symptoms similar to a mild cold, but his condition reportedly deteriorated rapidly into a severe infection, leading to his untimely death.
