In a significant development for air travelers in Nigeria, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has confirmed the resumption of low-inventory ticket sales by foreign airlines, offering cheaper flight options to Nigerians once again………CONTINUE READING
This announcement, made by Michael Achimugu, the director of public affairs and consumer protection at NCAA, brings relief to many who have been grappling with high airfare costs.
The reopening of ticket inventory follows a series of productive meetings between NCAA and various aviation stakeholders, including representatives from international airlines.
The move marks a notable shift from August 2022 when British Airways and other foreign carriers restricted access to their inventory in Nigeria’s global distribution system amid a dispute over trapped funds. This closure significantly impacted local travel agencies’ ability to offer tickets at affordable rates, burdening Nigerian travelers financially.
However, on January 30, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced the successful resolution of the issue, clearing all verified foreign exchange claims by the airlines. This involved the release of an additional $64.44 million to the affected foreign aviation companies, facilitating the normalization of ticketing operations in the country.
Achimugu’s update highlighted the positive outcomes of NCAA’s engagement with the international airline community, expressing pride in the reopening of low-inventory ticket sales for Nigerians.
The resumption of these sales is expected to significantly lower the cost of air travel for Nigerians, offering a wider range of options for both business and leisure travelers.
This development underscores the collaborative efforts between Nigerian aviation authorities, the CBN, and international carriers to address the challenges facing the aviation sector.
Achimugu emphasized the swift intervention of Capt. Chris Najomo, acting director-general of NCAA, in easing the situation and expressed optimism for more positive outcomes in the future.
Najomo, on February 12, expressed concern over high airfare costs, especially on international routes, and announced plans to set up a committee to review the situation and bring down airfares.
Foreign aviation firms operating in Nigeria include Lufthansa German Airlines, KLM, Egypt Air, Ethiopian Airlines, British Airways, Royal Air Maroc, RwandAir, and Turkish Airlines.
