“Our Beautiful Boy Was Gone Forever” – Adichie Blames Anesthesiologist For Fatal Error.
According to Nivo News, acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused medical personnel of negligence following the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. Adichie’s representatives confirmed that she issued a detailed statement outlining the circumstances, which was initially shared privately with family and close friends.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Adichie explained that her son, who fell ill during a Christmas trip to Lagos, had been admitted to Atlantis Hospital with a serious infection. Plans were in place to transfer Nkanu to the United States the following day, with a team from Johns Hopkins Hospital ready to receive him. The US medical team requested a lumbar puncture and an MRI scan, leading to a referral to Euracare Hospital, described as the most suitable facility for the procedures.
She alleged that during the MRI and central line procedure, her son was sedated with propofol. While waiting outside the theatre, she witnessed medical staff rushing in and was later informed that Nkanu had received an excessive dose of the anesthetic. Adichie said he was resuscitated, intubated, placed on a ventilator in the ICU, and subsequently suffered seizures and cardiac arrest.
Adichie accused the anesthesiologist of gross negligence, claiming her son was inadequately monitored after sedation and alleging that oxygen was switched off before he was carried to the ICU. She described the handling of her child as “criminally negligent” and criticized Euracare Hospital for allowing the anesthesiologist to continue working despite previous incidents involving overdose of other children.
Reflecting on the loss, Adichie said, “We have now heard about two previous cases of this same anesthesiologist overdosing children. Why did Euracare allow him to keep working?” She added that her son was “unwell but stable” prior to the procedures and expressed profound grief over his death, urging that such incidents never happen to another child.
