He Never Loved Politics, Yet He Persisted – UN Deputy Chief Reflects on Buhari’s Struggles”
Deputy Secretary‑General of the United Nations (UN), Amina Mohammed, has revealed that the late former President Muhammadu Buhari was never truly comfortable with politics, even though he kept striving for the nation’s good.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Buhari, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, died on Sunday in London and was laid to rest on Tuesday in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.
Mohammed, who served as Minister of Environment between 2015 and 2016 under Buhari, shared this reflection during an interview on Channels Television. She recalled that despite his discomfort with the political terrain, Buhari consistently put national interest above personal feelings.
She narrated how Buhari personally encouraged her to accept her current role as UN Deputy Secretary‑General.
“We were at a climate meeting in Marrakesh when Ban Ki‑moon told me the new Secretary‑General would like me to be his deputy. I said no because I had just returned home to serve Nigeria,” Mohammed recounted.
“Later, I discussed it with President Buhari, asking for his support not to let me go. He said, ‘Of course not. We need all our people back here to serve Nigeria.’ I felt secure. But soon after, the Secretary‑General called me directly. I was confident Buhari would refuse. When I returned home, he sent for me.
“He spoke at length about service and sacrifice. In our culture, when a father figure like him gives you advice, you know he wants the best for you. In the end, he said, ‘The decision is yours.’ But I knew what that meant — I could only say, ‘Yes, sir.’”
Reflecting on his legacy, Mohammed described Buhari as “an officer and a gentleman” who transitioned from military rule to democratic governance with determination.
“He was not always comfortable with politics, but he kept trying and trying again. He believed in the rule of law and in working within the system, no matter how imperfect, until he achieved his goal. It was God’s will that he became president at the time he did.”
