Shockwaves in Oil & Gas! Dangote’s LPG Price-Cut Plan Ignites Heated Clash with Marketers
The President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has unveiled plans to slash the soaring cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, across Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to reports, Dangote warned that if distributors fail to cooperate in reducing prices, his refinery may bypass them and begin direct sales to end users—a move aimed at making LPG more affordable for ordinary Nigerians.
However, the announcement has unsettled many existing market operators, who fear it could be a step toward monopolising the LPG sector.
Speaking during a recent visit by members of the Lagos Business School CGEO Africa to his Lekki refinery, Dangote described the current price of cooking gas as prohibitive for most households, forcing many to rely on firewood or kerosene.
“We currently produce about 2,000 tonnes of LPG per day. Nigeria is gradually moving to LPG usage, but the price is high. We’re working to bring it down.
If distributors refuse to reduce prices, we will sell directly to consumers so people can shift from firewood or kerosene to LPG for cooking,” Dangote said.
He added that the refinery’s output of 22,000 tonnes of LPG daily could easily be scaled into the local market.
But not everyone is impressed. Several industry players warned that Dangote’s strategy could destabilise a market that has grown steadily over the years.
Godwin Okoduwa, former chairman of the LPG and Natural Gas Downstream Group at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, described the move as monopolistic:
“The LPG industry in Nigeria grew from 70,000 metric tonnes in 2007 to over 1.3 million tonnes in 2022 through collaboration with government, NLNG, and private offtakers. Growth comes through collaboration, not monopoly.
Many players have invested resources to build this market. Dangote should respect that and work with the industry, not override it.”
He urged Dangote to expand the market through partnership rather than competition:
“Nigeria’s market is about 1.3 million tonnes, but it could reach 5 million tonnes. The pie can be bigger. Instead of squeezing existing players, let’s work together.”
Okoduwa even challenged Dangote to help develop LPG infrastructure in underserved regions:
“If he truly wants to help, let him go to the Northeast, where LPG consumption is lowest, and develop infrastructure there. That would be a real contribution.”
Bassey Essien, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, also dismissed Dangote’s plan as unrealistic:
“It’s not practical. Look at PMS—has his refinery been able to sell petrol directly to consumers at a cheaper rate? LPG won’t be different.”
Dangote’s bold proposal has therefore set the stage for a heated debate—between those eager for lower cooking gas prices and industry veterans wary of what they see as a looming monopoly.
