According to Nivo News, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has disclosed that Oyo State records an average of about 100 farmers-herders conflicts every month, highlighting the scale of recurring tensions linked to agricultural activities in the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The command’s spokesperson, Samuel Opebiyi, made the disclosure on Friday in Ibadan, explaining that the clashes are most frequent in Oluyole, Oke-Ogun and Ibarapa areas. He noted that the disputes are commonly triggered by issues such as grazing on cultivated farmlands, alleged cattle poisoning and other related disagreements.

Opebiyi said the NSCDC’s Agro-Rangers unit has continued to play a crucial role in preventing such disputes from escalating into serious security threats across rural communities. He explained that many of the incidents have been successfully resolved through Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms, which have helped promote peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders.

He stressed that sustained peace between both groups is critical to achieving food security, noting that agricultural productivity cannot thrive in an atmosphere of persistent conflict. According to him, efforts are being intensified to create an enabling environment where farming and cattle rearing can coexist without disruption.

The spokesperson, however, acknowledged that the effectiveness of the Agro-Rangers has been constrained in some areas due to manpower shortages. He said steps are being taken to expand and strengthen the unit to ensure wider coverage and improved management of farmers-herders conflicts across the state.

Opebiyi added that the deployment of Agro-Rangers in several communities has already contributed significantly to reducing clashes and curbing related criminal activities in Oyo State.

According to a DSS statement issued on Thursday, security forces acted on credible intelligence to raid an ESN armoury in the Agbani area of Enugu State. The intelligence indicated that the group planned to disguise themselves in National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniforms to carry out attacks on selected schools, intending to create a false impression of a bandit invasion in the region.

During this raid, operatives recovered a significant cache of weapons and gear, including:

  • Eight AK-47 rifles, 12 magazines, and 323 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

  • One smoke grenade launcher and two teargas canisters.

  • Various pieces of NYSC apparel, specifically 10 trousers, eight T-shirts, and four lanyards.

Several members of the organization were reportedly arrested during the operation. This follows another successful raid conducted on Tuesday by a combined team of DSS and military personnel near the Garki area of Enugu, where they seized an additional cache of arms, including a rocket launcher, rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) components, three AK-47 rifles, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

These security actions follow the recent arrest of five suspected arms couriers connected to the November 21, 2025, abduction of students and staff at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri Village, Niger State.
