A joint operation involving the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army has successfully thwarted a kidnapping plot by the outlawed Eastern Security Network (ESN) targeting students currently sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) across Enugu, Anambra, and Imo states.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to a DSS statement issued on Thursday, security forces acted on credible intelligence to raid an ESN armoury in the Agbani area of Enugu State. The intelligence indicated that the group planned to disguise themselves in National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniforms to carry out attacks on selected schools, intending to create a false impression of a bandit invasion in the region.

During this raid, operatives recovered a significant cache of weapons and gear, including:

  • Eight AK-47 rifles, 12 magazines, and 323 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

  • One smoke grenade launcher and two teargas canisters.

  • Various pieces of NYSC apparel, specifically 10 trousers, eight T-shirts, and four lanyards.

Several members of the organization were reportedly arrested during the operation. This follows another successful raid conducted on Tuesday by a combined team of DSS and military personnel near the Garki area of Enugu, where they seized an additional cache of arms, including a rocket launcher, rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) components, three AK-47 rifles, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

These security actions follow the recent arrest of five suspected arms couriers connected to the November 21, 2025, abduction of students and staff at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri Village, Niger State.

Following the arrival, the governor and his wife visited the deceased’s residence in Warri, where they offered condolences to his widow, Deaconess Roli Uduaghan.

Oborevwori, who described the late politician as his former boss, recalled the support he received from Uduaghan during his political career, including his appointment as one of his special advisers in 2007.

The governor also praised Uduaghan for his contributions to the development of Delta State, particularly his role in the establishment of the Asaba International Airport.

Paying tribute to the former governor, Oborevwori described him as a calm, articulate and reserved leader whose contributions to the state would not be forgotten.

“He contributed immensely to the development of Delta State, most especially the Asaba International Airport. He was a man of few words. He was very articulate, calm. He has gone, but he can never be forgotten by Deltans,” the governor said.

Uduaghan died at the age of 71. His death was announced on Monday by his son, Toju.

The late politician governed Delta State from 2007 to 2015. Before becoming governor, he served as Commissioner for Health and Secretary to the State Government under the administration of former Governor James Ibori.

DSS Arrests Suspects Over Alleged Plot To Attack INEC Officials, NYSC Members.

Published

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that security operatives have arrested suspects allegedly involved in a plot to attack its temporary election workers, particularly members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN), revealed this in Enugu, adding that the suspects would soon be arraigned in court.

According to the commission’s Daily Bulletin, Amupitan made the disclosure during the South-East Zonal Interactive Meeting with Staff and Readiness Assessment for the 2027 elections.

The INEC chairman said the commission had recently received information about threats to the safety of its ad hoc election personnel, many of whom are NYSC members deployed to support electoral activities.

He disclosed that the Department of State Services (DSS) had uncovered the alleged plot and arrested those suspected of being involved. He added that the commission was taking steps to protect its temporary workers from potential attacks.

Amupitan also announced plans to convene a security conference soon to address broader concerns surrounding the protection of voters, electoral officials and election materials during the polls.

On preparations for the 2027 elections, the INEC chairman said the commission had strengthened its collaboration with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.

He explained that the commission was working with security agencies at both national and state levels, using its Election Risk Management tools to develop what he described as a robust, intelligence-driven security framework.

Amupitan identified declining public trust, voter apathy, and the growing spread of misinformation and disinformation as some of the major challenges confronting the electoral body.

He warned that the rapid spread of false information in the digital era could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

“A single malicious fake news post, an unverified rumour, or a deepfake video can travel across millions of screens in seconds,” he said.

According to him, such misleading narratives can gain credibility when the commission fails to communicate effectively or perform its responsibilities adequately, placing additional pressure on officials working in the field.

He stressed that the conduct, competence and integrity of electoral personnel would play a crucial role in countering misinformation and protecting the credibility of the elections.

“The conduct, competence, and character of our staff in the field are either our strongest defence against fake news, or its biggest catalyst,” Amupitan stated.

He said INEC would tackle the challenge through proactive transparency, prompt official communication and strict operational standards at polling units across the country.

The chairman also warned electoral officials against compromising their duties, insisting that anyone found engaging in misconduct would face appropriate sanctions.

“Partisan leaning, administrative negligence, extortion, or compromised ethics will not be tolerated under my leadership,” he warned.

Amupitan further reminded staff that Section 26 of the Electoral Act 2026 requires electoral officials, including electoral officers, presiding officers, returning officers and security personnel assigned to election duties, to swear an oath of loyalty and neutrality.

He urged them to ensure that all decisions taken in the course of their duties were guided by the law rather than personal interests or political considerations.

“The question governing your actions must never be ‘Who will benefit from this decision?’ The question must always be ‘What does the law require me to do?’” he added.

Kaduna Politics Heats Up As ADC’s Ashiru Points Finger At Governor Uba Sani Over El-Rufai.

Published

El-Rufai has reportedly remained in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since February 2026 amid investigations into allegations of financial misconduct.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory is also facing a separate case instituted by the Department of State Services (DSS) over the alleged unlawful interception of communications involving the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

In June 2026, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, declined to modify the bail conditions previously imposed on El-Rufai in the DSS case.

Separately, the Kaduna State High Court denied him bail in a corruption-related case and ordered that he remain in ICPC custody pending further proceedings.

Commenting on the developments during an interview with DCL Hausa, Ashiru alleged that Governor Sani played a role in the circumstances surrounding El-Rufai’s current legal troubles.

The ADC chieftain maintained that he had no personal disagreement with the former governor, whom he described as an elder brother.

“I have no problem whatsoever with Malam Nasir El-Rufai. He is my elder brother,” Ashiru said.

He further alleged that Sani was behind the situation confronting El-Rufai.

“I want to reiterate that it was Governor Uba Sani who orchestrated the situation El-Rufai currently finds himself in,” he stated.

Ashiru’s remarks add to the political tensions surrounding the former Kaduna governor as he continues to face legal proceedings over the allegations against him.
