Outrage As Police Officers Face Discipline Over ₦100,000 Bribe Demand

The probe followed the circulation of a viral video on social media, posted by the victim’s elder sister, which detailed how officers allegedly attempted to demand money before taking action on the rape complaint. The video sparked widespread condemnation and prompted immediate intervention by the police authorities.
Following the public outcry, the implicated officers were identified, arrested, and placed in detention for alleged professional misconduct. An orderly room trial has been scheduled to commence on Monday, January 12, 2026, in line with established police disciplinary procedures, although the command has not disclosed the number or identities of the officers involved.
Meanwhile, the suspect accused of raping the minor, identified as 24-year-old Wisdom Onyeaju of Umuekweye, Irete, in Owerri West Local Government Area, has been arrested. Police said his arrest followed credible information provided by the victim’s family after the matter gained public attention. Onyeaju is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department, where investigations are ongoing, and he is expected to be charged to court upon completion of the probe.
