Lawyer Warns Sachet Alcohol Ban Will Fail Without Licensing Sellers.

Published

According to Nivo News, legal practitioner Liborous Oshoma has warned that the Federal Government’s proposed ban on sachet alcohol may not effectively reduce alcohol abuse unless strict measures are taken to regulate both sellers and consumers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Oshoma made the comments during an interview on Arise Television as the deadline for the enforcement of the sachet alcohol ban approaches. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced plans to fully implement the ban nationwide, targeting alcoholic beverages sold in sachets and small bottles under 200 millilitres.

Oshoma stressed that simply banning sachet alcohol without regulating vendors would have little impact. “Those who can sell need to be licensed; if anyone can sell, licensed or not, then anyone can buy and consume without due process,” he said. He emphasized that the ease of alcohol sales across Nigeria contributes significantly to abuse, noting that the country’s challenge lies not in policy creation but in effective enforcement.

The lawyer recommended that authorities ensure only licensed vendors are allowed to sell alcohol, with sales properly monitored. He commended NAFDAC for its decisive actions against illegal pharmaceutical dealers in Lagos as an example of strong enforcement.

Oshoma warned that without proper oversight, consumers could shift to bottled alcohol, undermining the impact of the sachet ban. He praised NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to combat fake and substandard alcoholic beverages in the market, acknowledging the agency’s dedication to regulation.

He concluded that strict enforcement and proper licensing of alcohol sellers are essential for the ban to achieve its intended goals.

‘Setback’ For Favour Ofili As World Athletics Rejects Nationality Change.

Published

World Athletics has rejected Turkey’s application to switch the nationality of Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili, blocking her proposed allegiance change ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The decision was contained in a document reviewed on Thursday and issued by the organisation’s Nationality Review Panel.

The panel, made up of Donna Raynor, Cydonie Motherskill, and Susanne van Waert, ruled that the application submitted by the Türkiye Athletics Federation would not be approved.

It said the request did not meet eligibility standards and raised concerns about fairness and the integrity of international athletics.

According to the panel, the bid was part of a wider recruitment drive involving multiple athletes, which it said risked encouraging nationality switches for financial or competitive advantage rather than genuine national ties.

The report noted that Turkey had submitted 11 similar applications as part of a government-backed effort to strengthen its team for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

While acknowledging Ofili’s dissatisfaction with Nigerian athletics authorities, the panel said her grievances were not sufficient to override established eligibility rules.

Ofili last competed for Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and had reportedly obtained Turkish citizenship, signed a long-term deal, and planned relocation.

However, the ruling means she is not eligible to represent Turkey in international competitions.

Despite the rejection, World Athletics said she may still compete in events in a personal or club capacity and is free to live and train in Turkey.

The 23-year-old remains one of Nigeria’s top sprint talents and previously set a world record in the 150m in 2025.

Hoyos was unveiled on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the club confirmed the departure of Javier Mascherano due to personal reasons. Mascherano had led Inter Miami to their first MLS Cup title just four months earlier.

The Argentine coach previously served as the club’s sporting director and shares a relationship with Messi that dates back over 20 years, beginning at FC Barcelona’s youth academy.

However, speaking at his first press conference, Hoyos stressed that personal ties would not affect his professional duties.

He said their friendship is “non-negotiable,” but added that it would not translate into special treatment or constant oversight on the pitch.

While the club initially described him as an interim coach for upcoming matches, later updates referred to him as head coach, suggesting a more formal role.

Hoyos is expected to remain in charge until mid-year, before a new technical structure is introduced ahead of the Leagues Cup in August.

Inter Miami CF currently sit third in the MLS Eastern Conference after seven matches, keeping them in strong early-season form.

Messi, captain of Argentina’s World Cup-winning side, remains central to the club’s ambitions as they continue their push for more silverware under new leadership.
