The family of an Abuja-based legal practitioner, Nwamaka Mediatrix Chigbo, has confirmed her death days after she was abducted by yet-to-be-identified kidnappers in the Federal Capital Territory.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the family disclosed the tragic development in a statement issued on Thursday, describing the circumstances surrounding her abduction and eventual death as harrowing. Chigbo, a former Treasurer of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), FCT branch, was said to have been taken by her assailants while she was speaking on the phone with one of her sisters.

The family recounted that the victim had been on a call with her sister, Anthonia, who briefly stepped away to attend to a client. Upon returning, Anthonia reportedly realised the call was still connected and could hear her sister’s cries of distress before the line suddenly went dead.

Efforts by family members to reach Chigbo afterwards proved unsuccessful until a call eventually went through. A male voice allegedly demanded a ransom of ₦3 million, issuing threats and abruptly disconnecting the call without providing further instructions.

Following the threat, the family immediately alerted security authorities and intensified efforts to locate her. Despite assurances that security operatives were tracking the kidnappers, the family later received distressing information that a woman in critical condition had been taken to a specialist hospital in Abuja.

On arrival at the facility, the family discovered Chigbo’s lifeless body at the mortuary, bearing visible signs of severe physical abuse. The body reportedly had bruises, swollen eyes and a fractured skull, suggesting she was subjected to brutal torture before her death.

The family stated that security agencies have assured them that investigations are ongoing and that those responsible would be brought to justice. They expressed profound grief over her death, describing her as a dedicated legal practitioner, a committed community member and a devout Catholic who contributed significantly to professional and religious organisations.

Chigbo was an active member of the NBA Abuja branch, the International Federation of Women Lawyers, and other professional bodies. The family also expressed appreciation to friends, colleagues and sympathisers for their support, adding that burial arrangements would be communicated in due course.

    • Goje noted that the other abducted girls were rescued prior to the start of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration in 2019, making the incident a matter of the past for the current state government.

    • Leah Sharibu was one of 110 girls kidnapped by insurgents in February 2018; while most of her classmates were released a month later, she was reportedly kept in captivity due to her refusal to renounce her Christian faith.

    • Despite ongoing government assurances, Sharibu remains the only student from the group still in captivity more than eight years after the abduction.

    • Regarding the state’s security, Goje claimed that the Buni administration has made significant progress since 2019, making all local government areas in Yobe accessible to both citizens and humanitarian aid.

    • This improvement in safety has enabled many displaced residents to return to their communities, where the government has focused on rebuilding infrastructure and providing support in healthcare, education, and agriculture.

    • Furthermore, Yobe has become the first state in Nigeria to implement the National Internally Displaced Persons Policy, providing residents with the flexibility to decide whether to return to their ancestral homes or relocate elsewhere while receiving continued government support.
