Fubara’s APC Defection Weakens Wike’s Grip On Rivers Politics — Ex-Commissioner.

The defection of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has significantly altered the political equation in the state and weakened the influence of forces aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a former Rivers State Commissioner has said.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, Austin Tam-George, a former Commissioner for Information and Communication in Rivers State, made the assertion during an appearance on a live television programme, where he described the political atmosphere in the state over the past three weeks as tense and rapidly evolving.

Tam-George stated that Governor Fubara’s move to the APC had disrupted long-standing power structures, leaving the Wike camp unsettled and prompting heightened political activity by the FCT Minister. He observed that Wike had recently intensified visits to several local government areas, which he interpreted as an effort to reclaim political relevance following the governor’s defection.

He argued that before Fubara’s exit from the Peoples Democratic Party, Wike’s loyalists enjoyed considerable leverage over the state government, but that advantage had now been drastically reduced. According to him, the loss of influence had triggered aggressive political manoeuvres aimed at reasserting control.

Tam-George also expressed concern over the deepening rivalry between the two political figures, warning that the prolonged tension could have damaging consequences for governance and stability in Rivers State. He noted that the escalating dispute risks diverting attention away from development and public welfare.

He further referenced recent remarks attributed to Wike, in which the minister accused senior APC figures and the administration of President Bola Tinubu of allegedly receiving inducements from the Rivers State government. Tam-George suggested that such allegations underscored the level of political friction generated by the governor’s defection.

According to him, the continuing instability arising from the power struggle between both camps could ultimately leave Rivers State and its residents bearing the brunt of the political conflict, rather than any of the key actors involved.

    • Goje noted that the other abducted girls were rescued prior to the start of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration in 2019, making the incident a matter of the past for the current state government.

    • Leah Sharibu was one of 110 girls kidnapped by insurgents in February 2018; while most of her classmates were released a month later, she was reportedly kept in captivity due to her refusal to renounce her Christian faith.

    • Despite ongoing government assurances, Sharibu remains the only student from the group still in captivity more than eight years after the abduction.

    • Regarding the state’s security, Goje claimed that the Buni administration has made significant progress since 2019, making all local government areas in Yobe accessible to both citizens and humanitarian aid.

    • This improvement in safety has enabled many displaced residents to return to their communities, where the government has focused on rebuilding infrastructure and providing support in healthcare, education, and agriculture.

    • Furthermore, Yobe has become the first state in Nigeria to implement the National Internally Displaced Persons Policy, providing residents with the flexibility to decide whether to return to their ancestral homes or relocate elsewhere while receiving continued government support.
