Grief continues to weigh heavily on the Omatu family following the tragic loss of three brothers who were among the victims of the inferno that razed the Great Nigeria Insurance building on Martins Street, Lagos Island, on December 24, 2025. According to Nivo News, the incident claimed eight lives and has left families and communities grappling with profound sorrow.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The deceased brothers — Stephen Onyeka Omatu, aged 50; Casmir Nnabuike Omatu, 39; and Collins Kenechukwu Omatu, 37 — hailed from Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State. They had relocated to Lagos in search of better economic opportunities and were reportedly engaged in business activities within the Great Nigeria House, a bustling commercial hub housing offices, shops, and warehouses.

Family sources said the fire erupted without warning and spread rapidly through parts of the building, leaving occupants with little chance of escape. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as thick smoke engulfed the premises, with people scrambling to flee for safety. The three brothers were among those trapped inside, and their bodies were later recovered after emergency responders succeeded in containing the blaze.

The tragedy has reignited concerns over fire safety standards, emergency response readiness, and enforcement of building regulations in Lagos’ densely populated commercial areas, where similar incidents have repeatedly resulted in loss of lives and property.

Those close to the Omatu brothers described them as industrious, closely knit, and deeply committed to supporting both their immediate and extended family. Since the incident, an outpouring of sympathy has come from within and beyond Anambra State, as friends, community members, and well-wishers continue to offer condolences.

Community associations, youth groups, and religious bodies in Ihiala have organised prayer sessions in their memory, while also renewing calls for stricter adherence to safety measures in commercial buildings. A service of songs was held in their honour on January 7, 2026, at Jesus the Saviour Catholic Church in Bucknor Ejigbo, Lagos.

The family has announced that the final burial rites for the three brothers will take place on January 14, 2026, in their hometown of Ihiala, Anambra State. Preparations are ongoing, with relatives arriving from various parts of the country to pay their last respects, while traditional rulers and representatives of several organisations are expected to attend the funeral ceremonies.

The state Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, disclosed that the suspect and the deceased initially connected online and developed a friendship after communicating for several months.

According to Daaor, Samuel later invited the woman to his residence in the Ahor area of Benin City, where he allegedly stabbed her to death with a knife.

The police commissioner stated that the suspect had been taken into custody and would be charged in court after investigations were concluded.

However, Samuel has offered a different account of the incident, claiming that the woman was injured during a struggle over a knife following an argument between them.

Speaking in an interview, the 21-year-old insisted that he did not intend to kill her.

“I didn’t mean to kill her, but she got injured in the process of struggling with her for the knife during an argument,” he said.

The suspect explained that he had met the woman on social media and that their friendship developed over several months of online conversations before she decided to visit him.

He said they were initially having a discussion at his residence, but the conversation eventually escalated into an argument.

“On the day she came to my house, we were discussing, but the discussion snowballed into an argument. In the process, she picked up a knife and intended to stab me,” he claimed.

Samuel further alleged that the woman sustained an injury to her neck while they were struggling over the knife.

He maintained that he attempted to save her after she was injured but was unable to prevent her death.

“I didn’t mean to kill her. I tried to save her after she was injured, but she died,” he said.

The police are expected to conclude their investigation before proceeding with the case in court.
