The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the release of six vigilante operatives who were earlier arrested by personnel of the Nigerian Army in Edo State. According to Nivo News, the individuals were freed after investigations established that they were lawfully operating as part of a recognised community security arrangement.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the police said the vigilantes were initially intercepted in early December 2025 along the Auchi–Ikpeshi Road in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State while travelling in a patrol vehicle linked to Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. The operatives were subsequently handed over to the Kwara State Police Command on December 31, 2025, for profiling and further investigation.

The police explained that the handover was carried out by the Brigade Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Sobi Barracks, Ilorin, Brigadier General N. N. Rume. Following a comprehensive review, authorities concluded that the six individuals were legitimate members of a vigilante group working in collaboration with recognised security agencies in ongoing efforts to combat banditry and other criminal activities.

The statement noted that the operatives were cleared of any wrongdoing and were released to their respective leaders after being exonerated. The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Ojo Adekimi, reiterated the command’s commitment to strong inter-agency cooperation and sustained partnership with community-based security outfits, while urging vigilante groups to always operate strictly within the limits of the law.

The police further assured residents of Kwara State of their continued determination to protect lives and property, emphasising that collaboration among security agencies remains central to tackling insecurity across the state.

The development follows the circulation of a viral video in December showing soldiers interrogating individuals alleged to be armed bandits found in a local government patrol vehicle. However, the Kwara State Government had dismissed claims that it armed any group, insisting that no state authority has the power to distribute assault rifles and that no bandits were arrested within the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, disclosed that the suspect and the deceased initially connected online and developed a friendship after communicating for several months.

According to Daaor, Samuel later invited the woman to his residence in the Ahor area of Benin City, where he allegedly stabbed her to death with a knife.

The police commissioner stated that the suspect had been taken into custody and would be charged in court after investigations were concluded.

However, Samuel has offered a different account of the incident, claiming that the woman was injured during a struggle over a knife following an argument between them.

Speaking in an interview, the 21-year-old insisted that he did not intend to kill her.

“I didn’t mean to kill her, but she got injured in the process of struggling with her for the knife during an argument,” he said.

The suspect explained that he had met the woman on social media and that their friendship developed over several months of online conversations before she decided to visit him.

He said they were initially having a discussion at his residence, but the conversation eventually escalated into an argument.

“On the day she came to my house, we were discussing, but the discussion snowballed into an argument. In the process, she picked up a knife and intended to stab me,” he claimed.

Samuel further alleged that the woman sustained an injury to her neck while they were struggling over the knife.

He maintained that he attempted to save her after she was injured but was unable to prevent her death.

“I didn’t mean to kill her. I tried to save her after she was injured, but she died,” he said.

The police are expected to conclude their investigation before proceeding with the case in court.
