The Labour Party (LP) has reaffirmed its position as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape, despite the departure of its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi. Abure acknowledged Obi’s contributions to the party’s success in 2023 but stressed that LP’s growth predates Obi’s entry and is rooted in sustained reforms and collective efforts. Highlighting the loyalty of other prominent figures, he noted that Abia State Governor Alex Otti joined the party prior to Obi and confirmed he would not follow Obi in leaving, underscoring the party’s stability.
Recounting events following Obi’s defection, Abure revealed that Baba-Ahmed called to reaffirm his commitment to the party, stressing that LP remains the platform that secured millions of votes in 2023. The duo also agreed that a reconciliation meeting should involve grassroots members, not just senior officials, reflecting the party’s emphasis on inclusivity.
Abure assured supporters that the Labour Party remains united and focused on providing Nigerians with a genuine alternative. Baba-Ahmed reinforced this view, stating his decision to remain in the party is principle-driven and that the LP represents the authentic choice for Nigerians seeking meaningful change. While he declined to confirm any presidential ambitions for 2027, he indicated that his decision would be made at the appropriate time.
The rally concluded with party leaders expressing confidence that the Labour Party will maintain its relevance and competitiveness as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections.
