EFCC Alleges Political Smear Plot Against Olukoyede, Vows To Fight Back.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has warned of an alleged coordinated smear campaign by politicians and interest groups aimed at undermining its investigations and discrediting its leadership.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The EFCC claimed that a network of hired agents comprising politicians, academics, self-styled civil society activists, and some Nigerians residing abroad had been mobilised to carry out what it described as deliberate campaigns of calumny.
The Commission said the attacks were designed to falsely portray it as politically biased through what it termed unfounded and fabricated allegations, with the ultimate objective of distracting and intimidating the agency into abandoning sensitive cases.
According to the EFCC, the strategy is to overwhelm the Commission with propaganda and fear tactics, particularly to discourage investigations involving opposition politicians, by creating the impression of partisanship.
The agency warned that the smear campaign is expected to intensify as the political climate heats up ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting that the activities of those behind the alleged plot were being closely monitored.
The EFCC stressed that it would not tolerate any attempt to derail its constitutional mandate of promoting accountability and transparency in public life, insisting that political pressure would not deter its operations.
Reaffirming its neutrality, the Commission stated that its actions are guided strictly by the provisions of its Establishment Act and the Constitution, adding that political affiliation offers no protection against investigation or prosecution.
The agency noted that several prominent figures from both the ruling and opposition parties are currently under investigation or standing trial, demonstrating that its enforcement actions cut across party lines.
The EFCC also dismissed claims of alignment with any political party, maintaining that it has no alliance or operational relationship with any political organisation.
It clarified that public statements referencing the presumption of innocence of suspects were consistent with constitutional principles and should not be interpreted as a defence of any individual or political group.
The Commission concluded by warning that it would not succumb to blackmail or pressure to make public disclosures on politically exposed persons under investigation, vowing to continue executing its mandate without fear or favour.
