APC Moves To Curb Wike’s Influence Over Rivers Political Crisis.

Published

on

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and several party governors are reportedly considering decisive steps to rein in the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over what has been described as his disruptive influence in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, party insiders revealed that discussions at the highest levels of the APC are focused on curbing actions by the minister that have allegedly fueled internal discord, particularly following the party’s public endorsement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara for a second term in 2027.

Wike has reportedly been at odds with the APC leadership over its open support for Fubara, a stance said to enjoy backing from influential figures within President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

The FCT minister, who preceded Fubara as Rivers State governor, played a key role in building the political structure that led to Fubara’s emergence as the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate and his victory in the 2023 election. However, relations between both camps reportedly deteriorated less than six months into Fubara’s tenure, following disputes over power sharing and control of state resources.

The disagreement later escalated into impeachment threats and prolonged political tension, culminating in the declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State in March 2025 and the suspension of the governor and members of the State House of Assembly for six months.

Following the lifting of the emergency rule, political alignments in the state shifted, with Fubara moving closer to President Tinubu. This realignment eventually resulted in the governor’s defection from the PDP to the APC on December 9, 2025, a development party sources described as a strategic political move that caught the FCT minister off guard.

Investigations indicate that efforts to limit Wike’s influence are allegedly being coordinated by a powerful APC governor from the South-East, who is said to be unhappy with perceived attempts linked to the minister to establish a rival political structure in his state through a PDP ally.

Party sources further disclosed that the plan may involve mobilising APC governors, ministers, and senior party stakeholders who are believed to have grown increasingly uncomfortable with Wike’s public conduct.

Senior party figures, including Vice President Shettima, are reportedly displeased with the minister’s recent verbal attacks on the APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, following the party’s recognition of Fubara as the leader of the APC in Rivers State.

It was gathered that aggrieved party leaders are preparing a formal resolution to President Tinubu, detailing reasons they believe Wike can no longer be accommodated within an APC-led administration. The move is expected to be presented upon the President’s return from his end-of-year vacation abroad.

Despite the reported plot, Wike is said to have continued touring local government areas in Rivers State to mobilise support for President Tinubu’s re-election. He has also vowed to resist any attempt by the APC to endorse Governor Fubara for a second term, insisting that a prior agreement barred the governor from seeking re-election.

The minister claimed the President was aware of the agreement, which he said included provisions allowing him to nominate Fubara’s successor, insisting that the arrangement must be honoured.

However, an APC leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, dismissed the claim, noting that any agreement Wike referenced was made when Fubara was a PDP governor and no longer applies now that he is a member of the APC.
