According to Nivo News, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered all state Commissioners of Police (CPs) to take immediate control of Special Protection Unit (SPU) bases in their jurisdictions. The order, issued on January 5, 2026, through an internal police wireless communication from the Department of Operations (DOPS) at Force Headquarters, Abuja, was addressed to all CPs and copied to Assistant Inspectors-General across Zones 1 to 17 and key departments at the Force Headquarters. The IGP emphasized that the CPs must ensure the effective deployment of these officers for crime prevention and response duties.

In addition, the IGP instructed CPs to organise necessary training programs for the redeployed personnel to enhance operational efficiency. State commands are also required to compile and submit comprehensive lists of all affected officers to Force Headquarters for monitoring and documentation.

The communication stated: “All SPU bases within your area of responsibility are to be placed under the control of state commands. Personnel withdrawn from VIP protection are to be deployed for conventional anti-crime duties. Organise training where necessary and forward a complete list of affected personnel to Force Headquarters. Strict compliance is expected.”
