Adelabu reacted on Monday to calls by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project for an investigation into the Ministry of Power and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc over the reported disappearance of public funds. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Bolaji Tunji, the minister described the allegations as speculative and misleading, noting that they were drawn from an audit report covering the 2022 financial year.
The statement clarified that Adelabu assumed office as Minister of Power in August 2023, well after the period referenced in the audit report, stressing that the issues raised had no connection with the operations or financial activities of the ministry under the current administration.
The minister said he had no objection to investigations into legacy matters but insisted that it was inaccurate to associate the alleged infractions with his tenure. He reaffirmed his commitment to transparency, accountability and due process, assuring that his office would cooperate fully with any lawful probe into historical issues within the sector.
Adelabu further emphasized that his professional record across public and private service reflects strict adherence to probity and ethical standards, adding that he remains determined to protect the integrity of his office while focusing on delivering stable and reliable electricity to Nigerians.
The response followed an earlier appeal by SERAP, which urged President Bola Tinubu to direct the Attorney General of the Federation and relevant anti-corruption agencies to investigate the alleged diversion or disappearance of over ₦128 billion from the Ministry of Power and NBET. The group also called for any recovered funds to be used to address Nigeria’s fiscal challenges and reduce the country’s growing debt burden.
SERAP argued that the allegations highlighted long-standing governance lapses in the power sector, maintaining that corruption has continued to undermine electricity supply across the country. The organisation cited portions of the Auditor-General’s report alleging unaccounted funds transferred to major power project accounts, undocumented payments to contractors, unauthorised foreign travel expenses and other financial irregularities within the ministry and NBET.
The development has renewed public debate over accountability in Nigeria’s power sector, which continues to grapple with persistent electricity challenges despite sustained reforms and significant public investment.

The Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to claims by Governor Ademola Adeleke that local government officials under the party diverted about ₦300 billion meant for workers’ salaries.
Adeleke had made the allegation during a stakeholders’ meeting, accusing APC-controlled council officials of hijacking funds and forcing the state government to shoulder salary payments for local government workers, teachers, health staff, and pensioners for over a year.
He insisted he would not abandon workers, blaming the situation for delays in executing some state projects.
But in a statement, APC’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, dismissed the claims, accusing the governor of misleading the public and shifting blame.
The party alleged that Adeleke was responsible for the salary issues, claiming he refused to release electronic payment vouchers and other financial documents needed for processing payments.
APC also said pension-related records, leave bonuses, cooperative deductions, and other financial data had not been made available despite repeated appeals, insisting that funds were properly accounted for and available for use if approved.
The party urged pensioners and workers to seek clarification, insisting the situation could be resolved if the governor allowed due process to take place.
