“Not A Reaction To Any Coup”: Aso Rock Explains Why Tinubu Fired Service Chiefs.
The Presidency has refuted widespread speculations suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent dismissal of Nigeria’s service chiefs was triggered by rumours of a planned coup.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, allegations of a possible military takeover had gained traction after reports claimed that 16 senior officers were detained over an alleged plot to unseat President Tinubu. The reports also linked the cancellation of the Independence Day military parade to growing unrest within the Armed Forces. However, the Defence Headquarters promptly dismissed the claims as false.
Speaking on the matter, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Tope Ajayi, clarified that the President’s decision to reshuffle the nation’s military leadership was part of a deliberate effort to rejuvenate the Armed Forces after two years of continuous service.
“This is not a reaction to any rumour of coups. He is exercising his constitutional authority. The service chiefs have completed two years, and it’s time for renewal,” Ajayi stated.
He explained that the move was intended to infuse “fresh direction, vision, vigour, and energy” into Nigeria’s military operations, given the country’s persistent security challenges across different regions.
Ajayi highlighted that insecurity remains Nigeria’s biggest challenge, with insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, separatist activities in the South-East, and rampant cases of kidnapping and communal clashes in other parts of the country.
He also noted that national security spending had consistently consumed the largest share of the country’s budget over the last 15 years, a situation the President aims to correct by addressing the root causes of insecurity.
“The President wants to deal decisively with these threats so that funds currently spent on defence can be redirected to critical sectors such as infrastructure, power, education, broadband, and healthcare,” Ajayi added.
He reaffirmed that the President’s decision was entirely lawful and within his constitutional rights. “Every appointee, whether a minister, agency head, or service chief, serves at the President’s pleasure. Only the President and the Vice President have guaranteed tenures under the constitution,” he emphasized.
