Tragedy struck St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Boji-Boji Agbor, Delta State, as Parish Priest Stephen Chukwuma collapsed and died while delivering his homily during the New Year’s Eve Mass. According to the Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku, confirmed in a statement by its Director of Communications, Charles Uganwa, Chukwuma was serving as the Regional Vicar of the Agbor Region at the time of his death. His sudden passing has sent waves of grief throughout the Catholic community in Delta State and beyond, particularly among parishioners who witnessed the incident firsthand.

Many attendees were reportedly left traumatised as the Mass abruptly ended. The late priest was from Akumazi-Umuocha in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State. Born on June 5, 1962, in Agbor, he began his religious journey as an altar server at St John the Baptist Catholic Church.

Chukwuma attended Ngala Primary School and Ika Grammar School before entering the seminary in 1982. He completed a Spiritual Year at St Paul’s Missionary Seminary and undertook theological studies at Saints Peter and Paul Major Seminary, finishing his formation in 1990. He was ordained that same year by Anthony Gbuji for the Diocese of Issele-Uku.

Throughout his career, Fr Chukwuma served in multiple parishes across Delta State, including St Brigid’s Catholic Church, Asaba; All Saints Catholic Church, Onicha-Ugbo; and St Michael’s Catholic Church, Ubulu-Uku. He also held prominent leadership roles within the Church, notably as Rector of St Felix Minor Seminary, Ejeme-Aniogor, and Dean of the St John of the Cross Spiritual Year Campus, Ekpoma.

His passing is being mourned by clergy and faithful alike, marking the loss of a dedicated spiritual leader whose service spanned decades.
