The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has expressed confidence that the ruling party will remain strong and relevant even after President Bola Tinubu eventually leaves office. The APC chairman emphasized that the party’s survival has never been dependent on any single individual, noting that it existed and thrived before Tinubu assumed the presidency. He said the APC possesses the institutional structures, political experience and leadership depth required to endure beyond the current administration.

Yilwatda highlighted Tinubu’s historical role in the formation and consolidation of the APC, recalling that the president played a central part in uniting various political blocs ahead of the 2015 general elections despite not holding executive office at the time. He also referenced the reconciliation efforts initiated in 2018 under the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, during which Tinubu was appointed to lead a committee tasked with resolving internal party disputes.

According to Yilwatda, Tinubu’s intervention helped stabilise the party and laid the groundwork for its victory in the 2019 general elections. He stressed that Tinubu’s leadership during that period demonstrated his capacity to unify diverse interests within the party, even while he was outside government.

Looking to the future, the APC chairman said Tinubu’s influence would continue after his tenure as president, describing him as a national political figure whose experience, network and strategic approach would remain valuable to the party. He added that future party leaders would continue to draw from Tinubu’s political insight and organisational strength.

Yilwatda also dismissed suggestions that the APC would struggle electorally in northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections. He cited the outcome of the August 2025 by-elections as evidence of the party’s expanding acceptance across the region, noting that the APC secured victories in several northern states while losing only one legislative seat.

He concluded that the party’s electoral successes reflect a growing nationwide appeal that cuts across ethnic and religious lines, reinforcing its position as a dominant political force in the country.
