The clarification was issued by the Director-General of Media and Publicity to the Governor of Kano State, Malam Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who addressed the matter via a public statement on social media. His response followed reports circulated by supporters of the Nasarawa Palace suggesting that the event was being organised in collaboration with the state government and its allies.
The claims reportedly sparked anxiety among supporters of the Emir of Kano resident at Kofar Kudu, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, amid the ongoing emirate leadership dispute in the state.
Reacting to the reports, Malam Sanusi Bature dismissed the allegations, describing them as false and misleading, while stressing that the state government has no role in any such planned activity.
The longstanding Kano Emirate crisis, which pits Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II against Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has continued to polarise the region. Sanusi II was reinstated as Emir following the election victory of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf under the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
Since then, the Kano State Government has maintained its recognition of Sanusi II as the legitimate Emir, while Aminu Ado Bayero is believed to enjoy backing from certain federal political interests.
With growing political speculation surrounding Governor Yusuf’s reported plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress, observers believe the emirate crisis could take a new turn in the coming months.
