Speaking in his New Year message on Thursday, Ikonne called on Abians to remain vigilant and actively question public officials, particularly on issues affecting governance at the grassroots level. He also challenged the governor to respect and uphold the autonomy of local councils in 2026, emphasizing that councils should operate independently as mandated by law.

The former Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) highlighted the importance of grassroots democracy, noting that effective local governance allows citizens to experience tangible benefits in their daily lives.

“As the new year begins, I stand with all Abians in hope and resolve. Abia is endowed with hardworking people, a rich heritage, and enormous potential,” Ikonne stated. “In 2026, I urge every Abian to be bold enough to ask critical questions of those entrusted with power.”

His call comes amid ongoing debates over local government autonomy, even after a Supreme Court ruling reaffirmed the independence of local councils.
