The payment was presented to Alfindiki in the form of a cheque at the National Assembly in Abuja. Senator Barau, while handing over the cheque, described the withholding of the former council chairman’s entitlements as unjust and incompatible with democratic principles.
He stressed that no individual should be denied lawful benefits because of political views or affiliations, warning that such actions undermine freedom of expression and association. According to him, constructive criticism remains essential to the survival and growth of democracy.
Senator Barau noted that Alfindiki’s stance and public opinions, which he described as constructive, should not attract punitive measures. He added that silencing dissent through the denial of entitlements weakens democratic governance and discourages accountability.
The Deputy Senate President, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, expressed concern that the entitlements were allegedly withheld due to Alfindiki’s political position and support for the All Progressives Congress.
Speaking after receiving the cheque, Alfindiki expressed appreciation to Senator Barau for the intervention, describing it as a gesture of solidarity and encouragement. He stated that he had no regrets about expressing his views and said the support had reinforced his confidence in the APC.
Alfindiki added that the gesture restored his faith in the party’s leadership, noting that it demonstrated a willingness to stand by members during challenging times. The cheque presentation took place on Tuesday evening at the National Assembly, Abuja.
