The match changed after the break when VAR upgraded Basilio Ndong’s booking to a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Bertrand Traoré’s ankle, reducing Equatorial Guinea to ten men. Burkina Faso pressed for a breakthrough, with Dango Ouattara and Pierre Landry Kaboré coming close, and substitute Lassina Traoré seeing a goal ruled out for offside. Against the run of play, Equatorial Guinea took the lead in the 85th minute through Marvin Anieboh’s header from a corner. However, Burkina Faso responded in stoppage time, with Georgi Minoungou equalising before Edmond Tapsoba’s header in the 98th minute completed the stunning turnaround.
Elsewhere in Group E, Algeria secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Sudan at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat. Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring in the second minute, setting the tone for the Desert Foxes, who dominated possession throughout. Sudan’s situation worsened when Salaheldin Adel received a second yellow card just before halftime, leaving his side with ten men. Mahrez struck again in the 60th minute before substitute Ibrahim Maza sealed the win in the 85th minute, sending Algeria to the top of the group after the first round of matches.
