Sani’s comments followed Dangote’s threat to sue Kaduna businessman Kailani Mohammed for N100 billion over an alleged libelous statement. Dangote, through his lawyer, reportedly issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding that Mohammed retract the statement, which was allegedly broadcast by Trust TV on December 17.

The alleged libel arose during an interview in which Mohammed responded to Dangote’s petition to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) concerning Dr. Farouk Ahmed, former Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

While some social media users criticized Dangote, arguing that the lawsuit could infringe on freedom of speech, Sani emphasized that legal recourse in defamation cases is a right available to all citizens.

In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Sani said: “Every citizen has the right to sue another citizen for defamation. Dangote too has the right. It is crucial that before alleging or maligning someone, you are equipped with facts and evidence to substantiate your claims.”

He added: “It is easy to post on social media, but when targeting someone, always ensure your claims are factual. Senior lawyers approach their online communications with precision and care. If you are sued for defamation, legal defence can cost millions, and those who ‘liked’ your post will neither appear in court for you nor assist financially. Defamation cases can drag on for years, consuming both time and resources.”

Player Substitutions
Under the updated rule, players being substituted must leave the field within 10 seconds. Failing to do so will result in the incoming player waiting one minute before entering. This aims to discourage deliberate delays, particularly when teams are protecting narrow leads late in games.

Injured Players Must Receive Treatment Off the Pitch
Players requiring medical attention must leave the field and remain off the pitch for at least one minute before returning. Previously tested in competitions like the Arab Cup, the rule aims to reduce delays and keep the game flowing. FIFA referees chairman Pierluigi Collina noted that this change will improve match rhythm and reduce time-wasting.

Expanded VAR Review
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will now cover additional scenarios, including second yellow card offences and incorrect corner kick decisions. Reviews must be conducted immediately to avoid disrupting the flow of play and remain limited to clear, obvious errors.

The IFAB believes these changes will promote faster, more transparent matches while improving consistency in officiating worldwide.
