NIN Now Serves As Tax ID For Nigerians, FIRS Confirms.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has clarified that individual Nigerians do not need to apply separately for a Tax Identification Number, as the National Identification Number issued by the National Identity Management Commission automatically serves as their Tax ID.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the clarification followed growing public concerns surrounding provisions in the newly introduced tax laws, which mandate the use of a Tax Identification Number for certain transactions, including the operation and ownership of bank accounts.

In an official statement shared on its social media platform, the FIRS explained that the updated tax framework eliminates the need for multiple identification numbers. Under the new system, registered businesses will also no longer be required to obtain a separate Tax ID, as their Corporate Affairs Commission registration number will function as their official tax identifier.

The agency explained that the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, scheduled to come into force in January 2026, requires the use of a Tax ID for specified financial and commercial transactions. The reform, it said, is aimed at simplifying identification processes, reducing duplication, blocking loopholes that encourage tax evasion, and ensuring fairness by making certain that all individuals and entities earning taxable income contribute accordingly.

FIRS further noted that the Tax ID consolidates all previously issued tax identification numbers by both federal and state revenue authorities into a single, unified identifier. For individuals, the NIN automatically functions as the Tax ID, while registered companies will use their CAC registration number, with no need for a physical card since the identifier is digitally linked to the taxpayer’s identity.

The agency urged Nigerians to ignore misleading information about the reform, assuring the public that the new tax structure is designed to strengthen efficiency, accountability, and transparency in the nation’s tax administration system.
