According to Nivo News, Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has voiced his disappointment over the absence of teammate Benjamin Fredrick from Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco following an injury setback.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Nigeria are set to open their AFCON campaign against Tanzania on Tuesday evening, but Fredrick will play no part in the tournament after sustaining an injury that has ruled him out for the entire competition.

Speaking to journalists in Morocco ahead of the crucial Group stage encounter, Bassey described the situation as painful, noting that the tournament would have been a major opportunity for Fredrick to showcase his abilities on the continental stage.

The Fulham defender admitted he had not spoken directly with Fredrick but expressed sadness over the unfortunate development, adding that the defender would have benefitted greatly from featuring at AFCON. Bassey wished his teammate a quick recovery and hoped for his return to the national team in the near future.

Fredrick, who is currently on loan at Belgian Pro League side Dender EH from Brentford, had been eager to make his AFCON debut before the injury dashed his hopes.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has played down concerns surrounding Nigeria’s defensive options ahead of the clash with Tanzania, despite being without three defenders.

The team will be missing William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina and Fredrick, with Troost-Ekong retiring from international football after the release of Nigeria’s provisional AFCON squad. Aina is recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during a World Cup qualifier against South Africa, while Fredrick’s injury will keep him sidelined for the duration of the tournament.

Despite the setbacks, Chelle expressed strong confidence in the players available to him, insisting that the team remains defensively solid.

The coach stressed that while he would have preferred to have the absent players in camp, he trusts his current squad and believes Nigeria have worked extensively on their defensive structure. Chelle also emphasized that defending is a collective responsibility involving all players on the pitch.

The AFCON 2025 Group stage encounter between Nigeria and Tanzania is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. later today, December 23.
