A former presidential candidate and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, held separate high-level discussions with ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) as part of his nationwide consultations ahead of the 2027 general election, according to sources familiar with the meetings.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The closed-door sessions, which took place on Monday, were aimed at engaging elder statesmen and key national figures on Nigeria’s future direction. Olawepo-Hashim reportedly visited Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta around 11:00 a.m., spending roughly an hour before travelling to Minna for his meeting with General Babangida. He was accompanied by the Chairman of the North Central Renaissance Movement, Nghargbu K’tsɔ, and other aides.

During the consultations, Olawepo-Hashim assured both former leaders of his commitment to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, restoring national unity, stabilising the political environment, and reviving economic prosperity. He stressed the need for purposeful and inclusive leadership to prevent deeper national fractures.

In Minna, Olawepo-Hashim highlighted Babangida’s historic role in preserving Nigeria’s unity, referencing the sacrifices made during the civil war. He warned that continued leadership failures could jeopardise the nation’s cohesion and called for the 2027 election to focus on national recovery.

He reportedly told Babangida, “Many of your colleagues did not survive the struggle to keep Nigeria united. If Nigeria is allowed to disintegrate today due to incompetent leadership, the sacrifices of patriots like you would be in vain.”

Though non-partisan, both Obasanjo and Babangida remain influential elder statesmen, widely respected for their enduring contributions to Nigeria’s political and military history and their commitment to national stability.
