Kwankwaso Applauds Tinubu’s Executive Order On Direct LG Funding.
According to Nivo News, a former local government chairman in Kano State, Musa Illiyasu Kwankwaso, has commended President Bola Tinubu for issuing an executive order mandating the direct release of local government funds to councils.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Kwankwaso, who currently serves as Director of Finance at the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, described the presidential directive as a timely intervention that would positively impact grassroots development and improve the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
He noted that the President’s decision to deploy an executive order to curb the diversion of council funds by state governments demonstrated a clear commitment to protecting the interests of the poor and strengthening governance at the local level.
In a statement he personally signed in Kano on Monday, Kwankwaso said the policy would empower local governments to function effectively and address the pressing needs of their communities.
He praised President Tinubu’s leadership, describing him as a statesman who understands the realities facing the masses and the structural challenges confronting local councils across the country.
Kwankwaso, who served two terms as chairman of Madobi Local Government during the administration of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, said the President clearly understands that financial autonomy remains the fastest solution to the problems plaguing local governments.
He explained that direct access to funds would enable councils to initiate and execute meaningful projects tailored to their communities, including the construction of hospitals and schools, as well as the provision of improved security at the grassroots.
Drawing from personal experience, Kwankwaso recalled that despite receiving limited monthly allocations during his tenure as council chairman over two decades ago, development projects were successfully executed and remain visible today.
He expressed concern that despite significantly higher monthly allocations running into over one billion naira in recent times, Madobi Local Government has little to show for it, attributing the situation to continued state control of council funds.
Kwankwaso added that granting full financial autonomy to local governments would reduce financial mismanagement, enhance transparency, and strengthen accountability at the local level.
He further reminded state governors that local government financial autonomy is backed not only by a presidential directive but also by a binding Supreme Court judgment, stressing that compliance is a matter of upholding the rule of law.
