Ohanaeze Urges South-East Governors To Boost Security Ahead Of Christmas.

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on South-East governors to ensure adequate security to prevent terrorist activities in the region during the Yuletide season.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The organization also urged the governors to provide free buses to help Igbos traveling from Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, and other northern states, citing the high cost of transportation. Ohanaeze noted that many cannot afford the journey home, and the prevailing insecurity in the South-East further discourages those who might otherwise consider traveling.

Emphasizing its role as the voice and custodian of Igbo interests, Ohanaeze insisted that the governors, as the Chief Security Officers of their states, must take immediate and decisive action to address these concerns.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Spokesperson, Chief Chinenyeze Ohia, the group urged the dispatch of at least 250 free Christmas buses—50 per state—to key locations in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, and other areas with significant Igbo populations. The initiative aims to ensure safe and affordable travel for Igbos returning home for the festive season.

Ohanaeze also called on governors to strengthen security protocols along all border communities in Enugu, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo States to protect citizens from potential terrorist incursions, particularly from fleeing bandit groups in the North. The group warned that any governor failing to provide these critical protections or assist in facilitating safe travel would face the judgment of the Ndigbo.

The organization commended the Nigerian military and other security agencies for their efforts in restoring stability in many areas, creating a safer environment for returning residents.

Furthermore, Ohanaeze acknowledged the strategic significance of President Bola Tinubu’s establishment of a military training depot in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. The initiative, a break from the historical concentration of such facilities in the North since Nigeria’s independence, is seen as a step that could inspire Igbo youths to join the military and help address the lingering security challenges in the South-East.

    • Goje noted that the other abducted girls were rescued prior to the start of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration in 2019, making the incident a matter of the past for the current state government.

    • Leah Sharibu was one of 110 girls kidnapped by insurgents in February 2018; while most of her classmates were released a month later, she was reportedly kept in captivity due to her refusal to renounce her Christian faith.

    • Despite ongoing government assurances, Sharibu remains the only student from the group still in captivity more than eight years after the abduction.

    • Regarding the state’s security, Goje claimed that the Buni administration has made significant progress since 2019, making all local government areas in Yobe accessible to both citizens and humanitarian aid.

    • This improvement in safety has enabled many displaced residents to return to their communities, where the government has focused on rebuilding infrastructure and providing support in healthcare, education, and agriculture.

    • Furthermore, Yobe has become the first state in Nigeria to implement the National Internally Displaced Persons Policy, providing residents with the flexibility to decide whether to return to their ancestral homes or relocate elsewhere while receiving continued government support.
