Akpabio had, during a plenary session on Friday, raised concerns that some members of the National Assembly could face security risks following President Tinubu’s directive ordering the withdrawal of police personnel attached to Very Important Persons. He warned that the decision could leave certain legislators vulnerable, particularly during the holiday period.
In his appeal, the Senate President urged the President to reconsider the directive, stating that some lawmakers feared they might be unsafe returning to their constituencies due to the sudden withdrawal of their security details.
However, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan appeared to push back against the appeal in a subtle but pointed response shared via her official Facebook page on Sunday. Quoting the Senate President’s remarks, she echoed the concern that some senators might be unable to travel home for the holidays if the policy remained unchanged.
In a sharp follow-up, the outspoken lawmaker questioned why similar concern was not shown when her own security escort was withdrawn earlier. She noted that her police protection was removed during what she described as an illegal suspension from the Senate, adding that she now relies on divine protection and the support of her constituents in Kogi Central for her safety.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was previously suspended from the Senate for six months, with her privileges withdrawn, following allegations of misconduct during a session in the Senate chamber.
President Tinubu, in November, had ordered the redeployment of police officers attached to politicians, business executives, and other VIPs to frontline community policing roles. The move was aimed at addressing manpower shortages within the Nigeria Police Force and strengthening security across the country amid rising concerns over insecurity.
