Ogijo lead poisoning: Ogun suspends Three environmental consultancy firms.

The Ogun State government has suspended three environmental consultancy firms over professional negligence and their alleged role in acid battery pollution linked to the now-closed Used Lead Acid Battery (ULAB) recycling companies in the Ogijo area.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, announced the suspension during a review meeting on the Process Audit of the closed companies, held at the Ministry of Environment Conference Room, State Secretariat, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.

The firms affected are Vyne Nurt Limited, Core Environmental Services Limited, and Saag Chemicals Nigeria Limited.

Oresanya explained that the consultancy firms, which were engaged by the ULAB companies, were found culpable during the audit. The audit revealed that pollution control measures they were supposed to ensure were installed had not been implemented, and the firms failed to provide accurate reports on the companies’ conditions to the state government, demonstrating professional negligence.

“Reviewing the firms’ reports showed serious deficiencies in presenting the correct status of the companies to the state government. To clarify the situation, we invited five consultancy firms involved to defend their reports. Two firms offered explanations that, though not entirely satisfactory, were given the opportunity to improve. The three suspended firms, however, deliberately absented themselves from the review, fully aware of their complicity,” Oresanya stated.

The commissioner said the state government had no option but to suspend the firms from all environmental consultancy services in Ogun State until they clear themselves of any complicity in the ULAB Process Audit.

He added that the Federal Ministry of Environment and the National Environmental Standards and Enforcement Agency (NESREA) have been formally notified of the decision.
